Not hands-on tested. This page is a reception report: it rests on Steam's store listing, Steam's review counts read on October 5, 2026 between 19:28 and 19:35 UTC, and one cited press article, not on our own play. Everything below is a measurement of what other players reported and what Steam states, and it will age quickly.
Steam's short description reads: "Once Human is a Strange Worlds Survival Game set in a strange, post-apocalyptic future." The game is developed by Starry Studio and published by Starry Studio and NetEase Games. It reached Steam on July 9, 2024 under app ID 2139460, and Steam's API marks it as free to play. Of 190,361 Steam reviews at the time of the reading, 150,529 were positive, which is 79.1% and carries Steam's "Mostly Positive" label. That number is the whole story only if you ignore two things: what it costs once you are inside, and which language the reviewer wrote in.
What Steam says about price and purchases
"Free" is the entry price. The store page also carries Steam's In-App Purchases category and a block titled "Content Includes Interactive Elements" that reads: "In-game purchases, Chance based in-game purchases, In-game chat, Online interactivity."
Steam declares both ordinary and chance-based purchases. It does not tell you how much anyone spends, how often a draw pays out, or whether any of it matters to progress: the store page publishes no draw rates, no currency prices and no crate contents. We also did not find rates in the publisher's own text. Its September 28 announcement for version 3.0.7 names Lightforge Loot Crates with a "draw probability, redemption cost, and guarantee system," a Combo Crate, a currency called Crystgin, a Meta Pass and a Battle Pass, but it describes the draw probabilities as unchanged rather than listing them.
On October 5, 2026, the Steam page listed two paid theme packs, and their descriptions are more specific. Ascend Daily (released June 25, 2025) and "Double Agent" (released December 19, 2024) each list at $24.99 in the US store. At the 19:31 UTC reading both showed $19.49, a 22% discount; no end date appeared in the data, so treat that figure as a snapshot. Their listings describe a clothing set, a decor formula, a pose, a decal or charm, and nothing that touches stats. That is the packs' own description, not a verdict on the game's other purchases. Once Human Steam reviews, by language
Read this with care: the all-language figure blends populations that disagree. Steam's review API returns a separate count per language, and the split is where the information is.
| Reviewer language | Reviews | Positive | Steam label |
|---|---|---|---|
| All languages | 190,361 | 79.1% | Mostly Positive |
| English | 92,743 | 80.8% | Very Positive |
| French | 6,584 | 82.9% | Very Positive |
| Traditional Chinese | 4,587 | 65.2% | Mixed |
| Simplified Chinese | 19,273 | 55.6% | Mixed |
Source: Steam appreviews API, read October 5, 2026, 19:28 to 19:31 UTC. Percentages are positive reviews divided by total, calculated by GamiPrime; the labels are Steam's.
Update, October 7, 2026: Steam's review counts and DLC list were read again on October 7, 2026 at 01:41 UTC. The totals had moved by about 100 reviews (190,462 in all languages), every label in the table above was the same, and the percentages were unchanged apart from French, which moved from 82.9% to 83.0%. Steam still listed two paid theme packs when we read it on October 7, 2026 at 01:41 UTC. The table keeps the October 5 snapshot so that all of its figures come from the same reading. A later reading for GamiPrime's Once Human game page, on October 16, 2026 (UTC), showed 191,132 reviews in all languages, still 79.1% positive and labeled Mostly Positive.
Two readings. First, the difference between English (Very Positive) and all languages (Mostly Positive) is 1.7 points. Steam's labels appear to change near 80%, so the two labels likely sit on either side of a threshold rather than describing different experiences. That is our interpretation of the labeling, not a Steam statement. Second, the real gap is Chinese: Simplified Chinese reviewers, the second-largest language group after English at 19,273 reviews, recommend the game far less often than any other language we checked, and Traditional Chinese reviewers follow at 65.2%.
Why the Chinese reviews are lower is not known. We read no individual reviews, and the API does not give reasons. Any explanation, whether it concerns purchases, servers, translation or something else, would be a guess, so this page offers none. Most other languages we checked are Very Positive, for example German at 82.8% and Russian at 82.3%. The exceptions are Mostly Positive: Japanese at 71.8%, Turkish at 74.0% and Polish at 78.0%.
On timing, the Steam page shows a tooltip reading 89% positive across 5,056 reviews in the last 30 days, all languages combined. A split of that recent window by language could not be retrieved, so the recent figure should not be assigned to any single language.
Storage size and PC specs, according to Steam
The system requirements on the store page, read the same day, are short. Minimum: Windows 10 64-bit, Intel Core i5-4460, 8 GB RAM, Nvidia GTX 750 Ti 4 GB (AMD RX 550 also listed), DirectX 11, 100 GB of storage. Recommended: Windows 10 64-bit, Intel Core i7-7700, 16 GB RAM, Nvidia GTX 1060 6 GB (AMD RX 580 also listed), DirectX 12, 100 GB of storage. Steam adds on both lines that an SSD is highly recommended. Snapdragon and Adreno chips also appear in the lists, which look like Windows-on-ARM targets rather than Mac or Linux support.
Steam's platform field reads Windows only, with no Mac or Linux build. Steam's Steam Deck compatibility endpoint returned a token that we read as "unsupported"; that reading of the category code is our interpretation. Third-party trackers list other platforms, but Steam's own listing is the source used here. No frame rates or performance results appear in any source we read, so none are claimed. The publisher's announcement does show that PlayStation 5, Xbox, Android and iOS versions exist, through update sizes listed for each; they are outside the Steam listing.

What Steam's data cannot tell you
Several things cannot be known from these sources, and a review that skipped them would be guessing.
- How the game feels, how it runs on a given machine, or how balanced its progression is. Steam's counts say how many reviewers recommend it, not why.
- What the chance-based purchases cost and whether they affect progression; no rates appear in the sources.
- The recent review split by language.
- The contents of the 3.0.7 bug-fix notes of September 29 and 30; we read only their titles.
Isles of Abyss: what happened on October 21, 2026
Updated October 27, 2026: the ocean expansion Isles of Abyss is out. The publisher's Steam post of October 21, 2026 scheduled the update and server maintenance for October 21 at 4:00 PM PT, expected to last about three hours, and noted that the actual server opening time may differ. Its list of additions includes the Isles of Abyss ocean survival scenario, a new RaidZone ocean map, new weapons and armor, a first-person over-the-shoulder option and a limited-time Halloween event. Steam bug-fix posts for version 3.1.1 followed from October 22. The same post gives the PC update as about 26.28 GB through the launcher, plus about 751 MB in game.
Before launch, two sources dated it a day apart: the publisher's September 28 announcement said October 21 at 4:00 PM PT, and Inven Global reported on September 21 that it would launch on October 22. The gap is most likely time zones; that is our inference. Inven Global also reported that the expansion would be free on PC, mobile and consoles. The publisher posts read for this update do not say so either way, so that detail still rests on the press report alone. Nothing in this section changes the review figures above, which date from October 5 and 7, 2026.
Our reading of Once Human's Steam reception
Steam's own data supports a modest claim. Players who reviewed Once Human mostly recommend it, more so in English, French and most other languages we checked, and clearly less so in Chinese, for reasons the material we read does not give. The store page is plain that the game sells items through chance-based purchases, and it does not say what the odds are. Our reading: a free game with a clear majority of positive reviews is a fair candidate for a try, but the missing odds mean this page cannot tell you the purchases are harmless, and the 100 GB footprint is a real cost to weigh first. The review split, the missing odds and the storage size are the three facts worth carrying with you. If you want to see how this compares with other free games, the ranking of free-to-play PC games by Steam reviews uses the same method.
Frequently asked questions
Does Once Human have loot boxes?
Steam declares "Chance based in-game purchases" on the store page, and the publisher's 3.0.7 notes name Lightforge Loot Crates. Neither page publishes the draw rates.
Why do Chinese players rate Once Human lower?
The data shows the gap but not the reason: on October 5, 2026, Simplified Chinese reviews were 55.6% positive and Traditional Chinese 65.2%, against 80.8% for English. GamiPrime read no individual reviews, so it offers no explanation.
Does Once Human work on Steam Deck?
Steam's own platform field lists Windows only, and its Steam Deck compatibility endpoint returned a code GamiPrime reads as "unsupported". That reading of the code is GamiPrime's interpretation.
How much storage does Once Human need?
100 GB on both the minimum and the recommended tier, with Steam noting that an SSD is highly recommended.
